Getting assessed for aged care
You need an assessment before accessing government-funded aged care. Here is the sequence.
Contact My Aged Care
Call 1800 200 422 or start online at myagedcare.gov.au. This is the entry point for government-funded aged care.
Arrange an ACAT assessment
An Aged Care Assessment Team member visits you — usually at home, sometimes in hospital — to discuss your needs.
Receive your approval letter
If eligible, you get a letter approving residential care, respite, or both. It explains what you are approved for.
Shortlist and visit homes
Use Retirely to shortlist, then tour them in person. Ask about vacancies in the room types you need.
Confirm fees in writing
Ask for a written quote covering accommodation and all fees before you commit to anything.
What to have ready
- Your Medicare card.
- A list of current medications and health conditions.
- Contact details for your GP and any specialists.
- A family member or advocate who can be present.
- Any questions you have written down in advance.
Waiting for assessment
Wait times vary by region. You can browse Retirely and shortlist homes while you wait — that way you are ready to move once your approval letter arrives.
